Engineers – High Priced Help?

When I suggested that we go back to the manufacturer after finding several obvious quality defects on a newly purchased man basket, I was told by the manager who purchased the asset “Engineers are high priced help that prevent work from getting done.  Quit farting around and just do it!”

After the shock and dismay, I did it, but did it right!  Found the specification for man baskets, certified a new weld procedure for the shop and worked my butt off to get it repaired and out the door. How could a manager for a well known, regarded company believe this?! Perhaps searching for the root causes may have lead to a path that was not favorable to a certain manager...

This is just one of my early memories of being a Maintenance Engineer and why focusing on Reliability has become my passion.
